our words make worlds

Language Chasms

About

What are the pedagogies of power that lie behind language teaching, learning and the building of lives in translation for young scholars? Organized by Dr Anna Kathryn Kendrick, this student workshop took place at NYI Shanghai in September 2019 as part of the university's first languages festival Translating Worlds. Reflecting on firsthand experiences of “translanguaging”, students worked together to create multilingual posters with terms and ideas they identified as difficult-to-translate or changed-in-translation.

Encouraging critical reflection, the workshop helped participants consider and understand better the goals held by young scholars pursuing a ‘global’ education, the languages they choose to learn, the concepts they choose as central or fundamentally misaligned, and the ways in which they seek to delve into and rescue meaning through verbal negotiation.
