Italian Heritage in Multilingual Liverpool: Stories, Trajectories, People

About

What is Italian culture in Liverpool today, and who are the people that share Italian food, language, music, stories? In November 2018 the University of Liverpool's Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, the Mammamia Association Liverpool and the Dante Alighieri Society Liverpool organised a day of storytelling, creative activities, food tasters and music to explore the diversity of Italian culture in the city of Liverpool.

The event took place at the Lark Lane Community Centre where participants discovered the histories, places and food of Italians from multiple homes. Attendees were encouraged to bring a story, a picture or memory and the desire to engage with aspects of Liverpool's Italian cultures. The day also included a talk by Dr Stefania Tufi on her research on linguistic landscapes, and a comparison of diaspora culinary practices amongst Eritreans and Italians in Liverpool. No proficiency in Italian was needed, just the will to engage!
