Understanding the Deep Past across Language and Culture

About

The Deep Human Past project held its Inaugural International Symposium at Australian National University on 12 December 2018. Convened by Professor Ann McGrath and Dr Laura Rademaker of ANU, and Professor Jaky Troy of the University of Sydney, the symposium brought together together researchers from the history, linguistics, arts, anthropology and philosophy disciplines as well as experienced Indigenous practitioners to explore the various ways history is conceived and recorded.

The symposium was also the premiere for leading international composer Andreia Pinto Correia's original flute piece Pleistocene Landscapes in honour of Professor McGrath's work. The piece interprets the changing sands of time with an emphasis on the Lake Mungo region, and was performed on alto-flute by Kiri Sollis, of the Griffyn Ensemble.
