This
workshop will comprise intralingual and intersemiotic translation activities so
participants can explore the approaches and considerations of a literary
translator - and how these are also useful for writers - in experimental,
accessible and enjoyable ways. No knowledge of languages other than English
required.

Jen
Calleja: is a writer, literary translator from German, and musician. Her poetry
collection Serious Justice (2016) is published by Test Centre
and she has a collection of short fiction forthcoming. She has translated
full-length works by Marion Poschmann, Wim Wenders, Kerstin Hensel, Michelle
Steinbeck and Gregor Hens, among others, and was recently shortlisted for both
the Man Booker International Prize and the Schlegel-Tieck Prize. Jen was the
inaugural Translator in Residence at the British Library and has taught
creative translation workshops for the British Library and The Poetry School,
as well as exploring literary translation through performances and guest talks
at the British Library, the Wellcome Collection and Tate Modern.
SONIC ATLAS: At the heart of SONIC ATLAS is the process of revitalizing connections between languages active in Europe through Language Stations, informal translation and discussion exchanges. Bringing together “language workers”, “language traffickers”, the informal network brings to the fore the all-important role of energising values of collaboration and friendship across borders and the relevance of poetic work and practice-led research for the renewal of translinguistic contact. Research into old endangered European languages as well as minoritarian languages spoken by recently settled communities are introduced into the project through recordings.
