Out of the Wings Festival 2018

Out of The Wings presents its 2018 Festival

The Out of The Wings annual festival returns to London on
2nd-6th July with a fantastic programme of rehearsed play readings, workshops and a one-day forum celebrating theatre in translation.

After a successful festival in 2017, Out of The Wings returns to the Cervantes Theatre in Southwark to present a series of evening play readings of some of the best drama from Latin America and Spain. This year’s programme includes:

2nd July: False Alarm by Virgilio Piñera (Cuba) – Translator Kate Eaton
3rd July: Reality - The Final by Michelle Ferreira (Brazil) – Translator Susannah Finzi
4th July: The Widow of Apablaza by Germán Luco Cruchaga (Chile) – Translator William Gregory
5th July: Masters of the Universe by Almudena Ramírez-Pantanella (Spain) – Translator Sarah Maitland
6th July: The Language of the Mermaids by Mariana de Althaus (Peru) – Translator Mary Ann Vargas

During the afternoons of the same week the festival will also host three translation-themed workshops at nearby venues: Africa Centre, Flying Fantastic and the Jerwood Centre. These workshops will explore topics related to adaptation, multilingualism, translation through the body and the role of the translator in the rehearsal room.

On July 6th, in partnership with Goldsmiths University and the Languages Acts and Worldmaking project, there will be a one-day conference at King’s College London, Waterloo Campus. Addressing theatre practitioners, academics and others interested in theatre translation, the conference will offer a space to share and discuss topics such as translation and pedagogy, translation and advocacy, theatre translation research as practice and commissioning theatre translation services. About out of the Wings
Out of the Wings is a multidisciplinary collective based in London which focuses on theatre from Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula in translation. Throughout the year the collective holds monthly workshops and other events, and its members are actively involved in theatre practice and research in the UK and abroad. This work is expanding and developing as part of the Translation Acts research strand. Out of the Wings also offers a digital platform and archive of translated plays. The virtual environment we have developed contains details of plays written in Spanish in different periods and countries, as well as information about their authors, sample translations into English, synopses, performance histories and many other tools for interpreting the featured drama.
